I had seat time in a Z06 at Willow Springs and rode passenger in an E-Ray, but never put street miles on America\u2019s mid-engined cross-plane V-8 sweetheart. Finally, five years later, I got to try the thing. I\u2019m impressed.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, it is a true sports car in a way most Corvettes struggle to be. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motor1.com\/news\/615462\/chevrolet-corvette-z06-evolution-track-video\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22615462%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22chevrolet-corvette-z06-evolution-track-video%22%7D\">C5, C6, and C7<\/a> were all good sports cars, but never great. Yes, they hit performance metrics and laptimes, but the joy of driving was somewhat lost on those Corvettes. They were brutal, with heavy inputs and little finesse.<\/p>\n<p>Corvettes were sledgehammers rather than razor blades\u2014Which is why they always struggled against other sports cars. The speed was never in doubt; it was always the sensation and shades of driver interaction that made the Corvette Other. Big, brutal, and unapologetic aren\u2019t often used as sports car adjectives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motor1.com\/reviews\/458186\/2020-chevrolet-corvette-convertible-first-drive\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22458186%22%2C%22section%22%3A%222%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%222020-chevrolet-corvette-convertible-first-drive%22%7D\">C8<\/a> is the opposite of other Corvettes. Not just in its mid-engined layout, or dual-clutch only gearbox, but in its tuning philosophy and approach. It\u2019s more sports car than ever before, tuned for the finer joys of driving. It\u2019s the first clean-sheet Corvette in three generations, the complete child of GM\u2019s talented chassis team. There\u2019s depth to the C8 that I can wax lyrical about here.
